SOUTH AFRICA and LESOTHO series

After visiting South Africa and Lesotho in 2011 and then again in Oct/ Nov 2013 the following are a selection of paintings developed after sketches and studies in the Maluti Mountain range between the Eastern Free State and Lesotho and up to the Drakensberg Mountains of Kwa Zulu Natal. It is a particularly beautiful, mountainous area inhabited predominantly by the Basotho people. Although landlocked within South Africa, Lesotho has always maintained independence and so does not have the post apartheid development of its neighbours. Very poor and living mainly off subsistence farming with very high rates of HIV, the people are nevertheless friendly and hard-working. It is a wonderful place

Often a feature of my work as I engage with the physical process of mark-making, the impasto paint layered wet on wet is also to create expression, depth and connection with the landscape I am immersed in. These paintings are all complete with beautifully handmade, deep, scooped and hand-painted white wooden frames - leading the eye into the work.
